The Vasantham Vision: Vasantham Special School

Our Journey:

The Vasantham Special School and Home was founded in 2016 by Venkatesh, R., who serves as the School Head. As a person with a locomotor disability himself, Venkatesh founded Vasantham to provide a loving and nurturing home for disabled children. His sole objective is to form a community where these children could support each other as their own chosen family.

The school began with a group of 12 disabled individuals and is located in Vadalur, Tamil Nadu. Today, Vasantham accommodates 50 children, many of whom are orphans, victims of abandonment, or similar vulnerable cases. The school specializes in supporting children with varying degrees of Mental Retardation (MR) and Cerebral Palsy and Mental Retardation (CPMR), with disabilities ranging from 20% to 100%.

Dedication and Impact

Vasantham operates with very limited support from the local community, which makes it difficult to meet basic, even monthly, needs. Meeting three meals a day is often challenging. The school relies heavily on its dedicated team of 5 trained faculty members. These teachers are described as more than just staff; they are like mothers to the children, working night and day to keep them safe, healthy, and alive. Over the years, the school has earned recognition as the Best school for specially challenged children in the entire Cuddalore district.

Venkatesh

Founder/ President

Our founder, a selfless visionary and humanitarian, turned his own disability into a mission of service. Despite many challenges, he established a safe home and school for orphaned children with disabilities. His goal is to foster a loving and inclusive community where every child can thrive as an individual.

Our founder is more than just a leader; he is a father figure to our students and a source of inspiration for many people. Living with a mobility disability, he turned his personal challenges into a lifelong mission of service. To better support children with special needs, he pursued formal training. He earned a Diploma in Education, Special Education and Teaching (Intellectual Disability) from the National Institute for Empowerment of Persons with Multiple Disabilities (NIEPMD) in November 2021.

With compassion and determination, he started this school to provide more than just education. He created a safe and nurturing home for orphaned and abandoned children with disabilities. Despite limited resources and ongoing hardships, he continues to run the institution almost by himself. He faces daily challenges, including food shortages, extreme weather, and unexpected medical emergencies. His selfless service has earned him several humanitarian awards, but he remains humble and focused on his mission. His main goal is to create an inclusive, supportive environment where every child feels valued and secure, building a close-knit community where they can find comfort, dignity, and a family of their own.

Priya

Special Educator

Priya is a B.Ed-qualified special educator with a Diploma in Special Education (Intellectual Disability) from NIEPMD. She serves as the School Incharge and Teacher at Vasantham School. Her work focuses on inclusive education, student well-being, and day-to-day academic leadership.

Long para: Priya is a dedicated special educator with solid training and hands-on experience working with children with disabilities. She is a B.Ed-qualified special teacher, which allows her to combine structured teaching with compassionate care. As the School Incharge and Teacher at Vasantham School, Priya plays an important role in the daily operations of the school. She oversees academic planning, classroom instruction, and student well-being, ensuring that every child receives personalized attention tailored to their individual needs. Her commitment goes beyond teaching, as she actively supports the emotional, social, and developmental growth of the students, creating a safe and inclusive learning environment. Through her leadership and dedication, Priya continues to uphold the school’s mission of empowering children with disabilities through education, care, and dignity.

Rajeshwari

Special Educator

Rajeshwari is a B.Ed-qualified Special Educator with over a decade of service at Vasantham School. She teaches, nurtures, and supports the children as her own. Her activity-based and familiar teaching methods help students learn with confidence and comfort.

Rajeshwari has been an integral part of Vasantham School for over a decade, bringing with her unwavering dedication, experience, and compassion. She is a B.Ed-qualified Special Educator who has devoted her career to teaching and nurturing children with disabilities. Over the years, she has developed a deep understanding of each child’s unique abilities, learning pace, and emotional needs. At the school, Rajeshwari not only teaches but also cares for the children as her own. She actively conducts a wide range of educational and developmental activities tailored to the students’ comfort and familiarity, helping them learn in ways that feel natural and engaging. Her gentle approach, patience, and consistency have played a vital role in shaping a supportive and trusting environment, making her a pillar of strength for both the children and the institution.

Kawya Shri D

School secretary

Kawya Shri Devasena has been the School Secretary since January 2021. She leads funding initiatives, donor engagement, and CSR coordination.

Kawya Shri Devasena, a REX Karmaveer chakra Awardee (Bronze), has been serving as the School Secretary since January 2021, playing a crucial role in strengthening the organisation’s outreach and sustainability. She is dedicated to securing funding and resources to support orphaned children with intellectual disabilities and special needs, ensuring the school can continue providing essential care and education. Her efforts focus on raising awareness about the needs of the disabled community and trauma survivors. She also acts as an important intermediary by connecting suitable donors, coordinating Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives, and ensuring that support reaches the children who need it most. Kawya holds a B.Tech in Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) from the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Puducherry, and brings strong organisational, communication, and coordination skills to her role.

Special Education for Children with Disabilities

Small-Scale Vocational Training

Your contributions empower our students with practical skills that lead to independence. Vasantham offers small-scale vocational training designed for children with intellectual disabilities. This training helps them develop work-related skills and boosts their self-confidence. With donor support, these programs assist students in moving beyond dependency and taking meaningful steps toward financial self-reliance and social inclusion.

Physiotherapy Support

Many children at Vasantham need ongoing physiotherapy to improve their mobility and manage physical challenges. Donor support allows us to offer regular therapeutic care that increases strength, coordination, and overall quality of life. These sessions are crucial in helping children perform daily activities independently and confidently, which reduces long-term health issues.

Speech Therapy

Effective communication is vital for learning, social interaction, and emotional expression. With donor help, Vasantham provides speech therapy for children facing speech and language difficulties. These sessions work to improve communication skills, allowing children to express their needs, connect with others, and engage more fully in both school and daily life.

Basic Needs and Residential Care

For many children at Vasantham, the school is not just a place of learning; it is their home. Your support helps us offer safe shelter, nutritious meals, clothing, and daily care to orphaned and abandoned children with disabilities. We also teach essential self-care and life skills, helping children gain independence while growing up in a secure, family-like environment.

Counselling and Trauma Care

Several of our children are survivors of abandonment, abuse, or severe emotional trauma. Donor-funded counselling services allow us to address their psychological and emotional needs with sensitivity and care. Through structured counselling and consistent emotional support, we help children heal, rebuild trust, and regain a sense of safety and self-worth.

Ongoing Work

Establishing a Permanent School for the Future Vasantham Special School

Embarked on its mission in 2016 with a mere 15 children, driven by a strong dedication to assist children with disabilities in rural Tamil Nadu. Over the years, the need for specialized education and support has steadily increased, and currently, the school caters to over 55 children, encompassing both day scholars and students from neighboring districts. The school is currently operating from a rented residential property with a monthly rental fee of ₹25,000, which presents substantial challenges in terms of space, accessibility, and infrastructure. Despite these hurdles, Vasantham serves as the only dedicated special school for children with disabilities in the Cuddalore district, making its services vital to the local community. Recognizing the pressing need for a permanent and accessible facility for people with disabilities, the founders took a bold step by obtaining a loan to purchase land for building their own school. This land now serves as the cornerstone for Vasantham’s future. The school has started the construction of a larger, specially designed facility that aims to welcome more students and offer inclusive educational, therapeutic, and residential services all in one location. The ground floor of the building has been completed, indicating significant advancement. Nonetheless, the overall projected cost of the project is ₹1.25 crores, and construction is currently paused due to insufficient funds. Completing this building is crucial to expanding the school’s capacity, admitting more children in need, and creating a safe, accessible, and sustainable environment where children with disabilities can learn, heal, and thrive with dignity.
